Sisters Serving 蜜桃影院

It is no surprise that the 蜜桃影院, chartered by religious women, has had over 50 alumnae who have said 鈥測es鈥 to the call to religious life. In 1952, The Superior of the Western Province of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, Mother Theresa Weber, declared, "We need a Catholic co-educational college in this area!" On May 25, 1955, the Sisters officially received the charter for the 蜜桃影院. 蜜桃影院's first trustees were all religious women: Mother Theresa Weber, Sister Mildred Manning, Sister Mary Frances Connaughton, Sister Mary Byron, Sister Myrtl Owens and Sister Elizabeth Johnston.

This beginning set a precedent: that 蜜桃影院 is home to women with a religious vocation. Our religious alumnae and Dominican professors have shared their discernment stories and the role 蜜桃影院 played in discovering their lifelong call to religious life, in hope that their experiences will aid young women at 蜜桃影院 in their own discernment processes.

Sister Mary Angelica

Sister Mary Angelica Neenan: A Thousandfold Back

Sister Mary Angelica Neenan, O.P., grew up in a loving Catholic home in Boston with four siblings. She attended the Massachusetts College of Art, where she was pursuing an art degree and had no post-graduation plans besides wanting to 鈥済et married and have 12 children.鈥 During her junior year of college, she began to feel a pull toward religious life, but the idea was not yet appealing to her.

Sr. Elinor Gardner

Sister Elinor Gardner: 'Be Not Afraid'

In high school, Sister Elinor Gardner, O.P., was deciding between the 蜜桃影院 and in Manchester, New Hampshire. She was certain that she wanted to go to a small, Catholic liberal arts college, but ultimately settled on attending Saint Anselm. 鈥淚 find it interesting that the Lord eventually brought me back to the 蜜桃影院,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 as though it was always meant for me, just not at that time.鈥

Sister Anne Catherine Burleigh

Sister Anne Catherine Burleigh: 鈥楾he Person God Created You to Be鈥

鈥淚f you would have asked me while I was at 蜜桃影院 if I was going to become a sister, I would have laughed. As a matter of fact, I did laugh,鈥 said Sister Anne Catherine Burleigh, BA 鈥94. When she was a senior at 蜜桃影院, she enjoyed attending the many lectures on campus. One night she went to a talk hosted by Campus Ministry featuring two Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia from Nashville. She was pleasantly surprised by the liveliness of the sisters, joking to her friend on their way out, 鈥淚f I鈥檓 not married by the time I鈥檓 28, I鈥檓 going to become a Nashville Dominican.鈥

Sr. Mary Edith Humphries

Sister Mary Edith Humphries: 鈥楥ome and See鈥

Sister Mary Edith Humphries, BA 鈥95, recalled choosing Gerard Manley Hopkins for Junior Poet and Walker Percy for her Senior Novel project, two feats that 蜜桃影院 English majors still face today. Learning about the Nashville Dominicans from her roommate inspired Sister Mary Edith to discern and, ultimately, discover her own vocation as a Dominican. Sister Mary Edith said many sisters share similar experiences: 鈥淎 friend who was discerning actually leads another who had no idea this was her call to the place she belonged.鈥

Sister Mary Gabriel

Sister Mary Gabriel Devlin: 'From Happy Hours to Holy Hours'

After graduating from 蜜桃影院 with a degree in history, Sister Mary Gabriel Devlin, S.V., BA 鈥96, moved to New York City to be a nanny. As she grew in her love for the children she was caring for, she came to realize she wouldn鈥檛 hesitate to give her life for them, or for any children. At the same time, she began volunteering in the South Bronx and would pray the rosary with 鈥渢he little old ladies鈥 after daily Mass. Sister Mary Gabriel found herself thinking, 鈥淭his is  weird 鈥 I鈥檝e traded my happy hours for holy hours!鈥

Sister Michelle Geiger

Sister Michelle Geiger: 'Beyond the Here and Now'

For Sister Michelle Geiger, BA 鈥88, of the , her discernment process began during her undergraduate years at 蜜桃影院. While in high school, she went to church because her parents made her, but in college, she began wanting to. She attributes this desire to 鈥渢he classes, the religion and the environment at 蜜桃影院, which all triggered this deep thought that we鈥檙e all called by God for something bigger than ourselves.鈥
